Earth Day: Lyrid Meteor Shower

The Lyrid meteor shower (LYR) often falls on Earth Day and it’s a nice treat for night watchers. This year the nearly full moon was a problem for visual observers. While this also affects the limiting magnitude of meteor cameras they are watching all night regardless of conditions.

This is last nights stack of detected meteors for camera US004L:

Thats a nice collection of meteors captured given the moon being in the cameras fov part of the night. Fortunate that clouds didn’t roll in until morning as well. Likely tonight will be much clouder as well.

Without a doubt US004L camera catches more meteors than my US002J camera. Perhaps its the direction that favors that? I need to investigate why that is so strikingly obvious (direction? sky limiting magnitude? camera variation?).

Below is the US004L radiant report for the night as well:

Its rather nifty the RMS software generates this.
